FAQ: Is MMA Meant to Simulate Street Fighting?

A lot of people still don’t think of MMA as a sport. So this question comes up:

Is MMA meant to simulate street fighting?

The quick answer is, no.

MMA is a sport, and with all the rules in place in modern MMA, it is nowhere near as brutal as it used to be. Modern day fighters are elite athletes, rather than street fighters or brawlers.

MMA is meant to be a competition to see who the best mixed martial artist is. There is no intention to simulate street fighting. There are rules in place to protect fighters’ safety; no such rules are in place during street fights.

Just watch some Youtube videos of “street fights caught on tape” and then watch professional MMA fights, like you see in the UFC. The two are not even close to being the same.

If anything, street fighters are trying to mimic MMA, not the other way around.
