If you browse around MMAFanGuide.com, you’ll see that we don’t report MMA news. Sometimes we cover a news story if it relates to something new fans should know, such as the “Fighters weigh in on judging” video, but normally we save the news reporting for the sports journalists.
So, where do you go to catch the latest MMA news?
That’s a very good question, because MMA is such a new sport, that it can be tough to find quality news sources. There are three main problems:
- You’ll be surrounded by websites with little to no credibility (where rumors = facts.)
- Some sites have journalists that can’t yet read and write at a 3rd grade level.
- Mainstream sports journalists (Yahoo! Sports for example) don’t yet have a grasp on MMA.
With that in mind, I’ll tell you which sites I think are best for news.
First place, without a doubt, goes to MMA Junkie. The post a lot of fresh news, they get their facts straight, and it appears they have editors who check spelling, punctuation, and grammar.
I also check the Sherdog news sometimes, to see if they have anything I missed at MMA Junkie. The writing isn’t always the greatest, and I often disagree with their authors’ opinions, but it’s not all bad.
Now, reading news is great, but if you’re not catching the many video interviews, you’re missing out! So the other question is, who does the best video interviews in MMA?
The most popular is Ariel Helwani for MMAFighting.com – he gets interviews with everyone, and they are always top notch. Great questions, he’s always on his toes, and the video and audio quality are practically guaranteed to be perfect. (And you can follow Ariel on Twitter.)
Second place I have to give to fast-rising star Karyn Bryant for MMAHEAT.com. I don’t remember seeing her interviews until sometime in 2010, but over the past year, she has really grown on me. She has a good on-camera persona, and technical quality of the videos is usually very good. (Also follow Karyn on Twitter.)
Third place is tough, but I’d say it goes to Aaron Tru (MMAPrime.tv, Twitter.) Aaron Tru does a lot of things you don’t see the other reporters doing (like getting into the gym workouts with fighters,) which is really cool. I used to think he was just a goofball, but I’ve come to enjoy his videos, and I’m always curious what he’s up to next.
Who are your favorite journalists, reporters, and other MMA personalities? Ariel Helwani, Karyn Bryant, Aaron Tru, Megan Olivi, Ben Fowlkes, Josh Gross, or someone else?
I <3 Megan Olivi
